Her book is an argument that "American Christians ... want to see, hear, and touch God. It is not enough for Christians to go to church, lead a righteous life, and hope for an eventual place in heaven." This argument is amply defended by smart essays about family Bibles, gravestone design, and Lourdes Water, as well as hundreds of illustrations of vestments, churches, portraits of Jesus, rapture T-shirts, and backyard statues of Our Lady. Where Material Christianity gets really interesting, however, is in its assertion that "Christian material culture does not simply reflect an existing reality. Experiencing the physical dimension of religion helps bring about religious values, norms, behaviors, and attitudes." For example, the warmth and intimacy of Warner Sallman's painting "Head of Christ," which hung in almost every Protestant Sunday School classroom in America until the 1960s, was probably every bit as influential as any given phrase from the Sermon on the Mount in determining the personal nature of Protestants' relationships with Jesus. The result of one man making a book with no review.

Well, Shames has done it again. With this fourth edition students will be gaping with pleasure and awe as they deal with contradictory statements and curt text which assumes much and reveals little. Can you identify the elusive "incorrectly answered" question in chapter 1? If the bland monochrome illustrations don't keep you glued to this chart-topper, the interesting pictures of bridges near the author's home will. And don't forget all of the "practical military experiences" one will gain from solving endless ballistic and "tank-up-the-hill" problems. Oh wait, maybe it's extreme frustration coupled with a boatload of problems due that will keep you in on Thursday nights! Author's note: Beware! Shames has been known to hassle students for even possessing other engineering texts in his class!

A head-scratcher

Shames manages to take one of the simplest mechanics courses ever and turn it into rocket science (that's not until next semester....). Even taking the class taught by the author himself, I remain baffled most of the time. The book has moments of clear language, but manages to leave out key details about necessary topics. There are more than enough examples, but he manages to skip and combine so many steps and methods, it can only leave a student puzzled. Leave this text for the study of theory, but use something else for applications.

Wonderful American Girl Short Story

Nice short story for American Girls fans.

Nine-year-old Kaya and her family have traveled to the Big River to trade and visit with other tribes. While there, Kaya meets another girl her age, Spotted Owl, who is one of the River People. When Kaya looses a race against Spotted Owl, she becomes jealous of her. Her jealousy becomes even worse when Speaking Rain, Kaya's adopted sister, begins to spend time with Spotted Owl. However, Kaya must overcome her jealousy to work together with Spotted Owl during a crisis.

This was a nice short story that fans of American Girls books, particularly those who especially enjoyed the Kaya books, are sure to enjoy. It is historically accurate about what life was like for a young Nez Perce girl in 1764, and has beautiful illustrations and a nice message for young girls.

Another excellent Kaya story

This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Kaya’aton’my’, a nine-year-old Native-American girl growing up among the Nez Perce people in 1764. In this book, when Kaya losses a footrace against a girl from another tribe, she becomes jealous; but things go from bad to worse when it turns out that this same girl has become friends with Kaya’s sister, Speaking Rain. Eventually, though, Kaya realizes that her jealousy has gone too far, and when a crisis hits, Kaya learns that there is much to be gained by working together.

This is another excellent American Girl story. My twelve-year-old daughter is a great fan of Kaya, and I must admit that I like the stories as well. I like the lesson that Kaya learns in this story, plus I like the story and illustrations for themselves. This is a very good book, one that my daughter and I both highly recommend.
