The distinct yet overlapping mask types and styles used by these groups reflect their continual interaction and demonstrate the constant reformulation of visual and performance genres. Relations among peoples of the “Three Corners” are further complicated by recent refugee flows, and the masquerades that Jordán considers and vividly illustrates in his field photographs reflect histories of compromise and creative tension, as well as contemporary struggles for survival.

While exquisite masks drawn from the Fowler Museum's collections demonstrate long use, Jordán shows how new characters can be created within earlier categories, so that basic dramatic plots are preserved while reference is made to new technologies, foreign encounters, and the dynamics of social interaction in a rapidly changing world. In many ways, as the author astutely argues, the masks are a performative mechanism used to explain, cope with, and, often enough, celebrate life's most difficult transitions and transformations. Makishi vibrantly documents the ability of theater to perpetuate tradition while providing an adaptive leading edge.

Modest but very well presented book

Softcover with flaps, 10" x 8", 84 pages, 55 excellent field photos, 24 catalogue photos (All in color, all well sized). Short text, 1 map, references cited. By Manuel Jordan, preface by Allen F. Roberts. Published by Fowler Museum at UCLA, Los Angeles, 2006.

This is a small and modest book, but despite its limited scope. I think that the book is worth a four star rating because the text, featured objects and field photos are all excellent. The "catalogue" masks are of 3 to 4 star quality, and are matched with detailed descriptions. In the accompanying field photos, it is really good to see so many Makishi masks being worn by the peoples of Zambia. Best of all, as of December 2012, the book can be bought new for under 20 bucks, and used for under ten bucks.

Very useful instruction

Great book by a master of the faith. St. Augustine writes this book (or letter) to the Deacon Deogratias, who is asking for help.

St. Augustine writes how to give a homily: (1) Brief Introduction; (2) Historical Background (which includes the major events from Creation to Revelation; (3) Exhortation.

He also gives some advice on how to overcome discouragement, which we still experience today. He empathizes with Deacon Deogratias.

It's been a while since I read this book, but he may also go into the different senses of scripture.

About the Author
Matthew B. Miles, a social psychologist, had a career-long interest in strategies for educational reform. His work focused on planned change in education, group and organizational studies, and the dissemination and implementation of research findings. His first major research project was a four-year study of six new, innovative public schools.

A. Michael Huberman’s long-term interests were in scientific epistemology and adult cognition and knowledge use. His work focused on education policy, school reform, and the practical translation of research knowledge into effective school practice. His first extensive project was a four-year study of an experimental elementary school’s implementation of Piagetian theories into classroom practice..

Johnny Saldaña is Professor Emeritus of Theatre from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts’ School of Film, Dance, and Theatre at Arizona State University. He has been involved in the field of theatre as a teacher educator, director, playwright, and qualitative researcher. Saldaña’s research methods have been used and cited internationally for studies in K-12 and higher education, the fine arts, business, technology, social sciences, government, social services, communication, human development, sport, health care, and medicine. He is the author of Longitudinal Qualitative Research: Analyzing Change Through Time (AltaMira Press, 2003), recipient of the 2004 Outstanding Book Award from the National Communication Association’s Ethnography Division; Ethnodrama: An Anthology of Reality Theatre (AltaMira Press, 2005), an edited collection of ethnographic-based plays; The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers (Sage Publications, 2009; second edition, 2013), a handbook on qualitative data analysis; Fundamentals of Qualitative Research (Oxford University Press, 2011), a commissioned introductory textbook and volume one of the Understanding Qualitative Research series; Ethnotheatre: Research from Page to Stage (Left Coast Press, 2011), a playwriting primer for performance ethnography and recipient of the American Educational Research Association’s Qualitative Research Special Interest Group’s 2012 Outstanding Book Award; and Qualitative Data Analysis: A Methods Sourcebook, third edition (Sage Publications, 2014), a commissioned update and revision of the late Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman’s second edition (1994) book, Qualitative Data Analysis: An Expanded Sourcebook.

Pretty good book on qualitative data analysis

I've been pretty happy with this book -- clearly describes their recommended approach for analyzing qualitative data. In short, they are all about TABLES. They spend chapter after chapter presenting different variations on the types of tables you can use to summarize and analyze and draw connections in your qualitative data. I'm not totally sold on the need for tables if you're coding your data in NVivo anyway, but it's interesting to read this perspective and it seems like there could certainly be occasions when tables would make sense. Plus this book is considered seminal, so it's a good one to get and read.

For those who have read Robert Ludlum's more serious works, these 2 are a refreshing, if somewhat "warped" change of pace. Ludlum writing humor? You bet! Start with Road to Gandolfo to set the stage for Road to Omaha. Both are preposterous but funny if you don't take anything too seriously. A larger than life main character with 4 lovely ex-wives who will go to the ends of the earth for him & an attorney who gets caught up in it all under duress - great fun.
