Grade 4 Up-This recording of A Christmas Carol is a pleasant way to spend a few hours during the holiday season. Although abridged, it retains the spirit and language of Dickens' original manuscript. Anton Lesser gives a superb performance as the narrator and the voices of the characters, especially when portraying the Cratchit family, the Christmas Spirits and the London dialects. All characters are easily understood. Appropriate music begins and ends each cassette. This enjoyable retelling would be especially appropriate for family listening and a special treat for English literature classes.

Possibly the best "Christmas Carol" ever

Many versions of Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" are actually abridgements (done more or less smoothly) but this version is complete and unabridged. Even if you think you are familiar with the book you may find upon reading this one that you previously had read a shortened version! The completeness of this volume would be reason enough to add it to your library, but the quality of the pages, typeface, and above all the lovely illustrations scattered throughout further commend it. I have bought copies for all 3 of my grown children--because every family deserves to own a complete version of this classic story and this one is the best I have ever seen.

Read the book the way Dickens wrote it..........

I hope all readers take time to read A CHRISTMAS CAROL in the original language Dickens used in the 1840's. Dickens' language remains humorous, descriptive and insightful and not inaccessible to most modern readers especially with the use of a good glossary. This is a great read aloud for families at Christmas time and also a great introduction to Dickens and other Victorian writers. Don't settle for an abridged version. Read this masterpiece the way it was intended

Beautiful Volume

I collect "A Christmas Carol" and this is a particularly lovely volume. The illustrations are wonderful and the overall quality, printing, binding and paper, is terrific. This is definitely in my top three favorites of all the different versions I own.

Moose to Moccasins

This book is a delightful autobiography of an Ojbway woman who shares her life's journey in very readable and organized style from her childhood on Bear Island, through the changes that white encroachment made in her peoples lifestyle, through involvement in the tourist idustry including the making of a movie "The Silent Enemy," through her marriage and raising of children and grandchildren and her ordeals with tuberculosis. In the final anaylsis, Ka Kita Wa Pa No Kew (her Objway name) gives equal credit and blame where it is due to all the people with whom she interacted in her life. A great, easy read for Indian History fans or scholars and anyone interested in the triumphs of the human spirit-- especially ones that survive to Senior Citizen status with a happy heart.

A Long Time Coming For Modern Poetry

Leonard Cohen's Book of Longing

Aside from being a creative genius in a multitude of artistic disciplines, Leonard Cohen is an old man. And with age comes wisdom. Take for example, this stanza from "Better."

better than art
is repulsive art
which demonstrates
better than scripture
the tiny measure
of your improvement

No dummy, this guy. But then, you knew that already.

Twenty years in the making, Book of Longing [Ecco/HarperCollins]was written on southern California's Mount Baldy and in Los Angeles, Montreal and Mumbai. The author of twelve books and seventeen albums of music, this collection of poems follows his highly acclaimed 1984 publication, Book of Mercy. Containing his own wonderful, playful and provocative line drawings, Book of Longing is a celebration of one of contemporary times' best and truest flesh-and-blood examples of unlimited artistic expression.

Leonard Cohen's poetry is loaded with Bukowski's truth and simple statements, but without the ugliness. There are tons of love poems, reflections on drinking and God (oops, I mean "G-d"--he's Jewish, you know), loneliness, philosophy, aging, friendships, food, sober highs, celebrations of the body and sex, sex, sex. But it's all done with manners--a classiness Bukowski never knew-- a masculine sensitivity that's never maudlin, and a ripe, heavy, juice-laden life that few words in print have ever had the strength to carry.

There are some moments when Cohen veers into classical meter and rhyme, but he pulls it off with the smart currency of the lyric, and yet somehow, even in the hipness, he can still manage to make the reader tear up:

And fragrant is the thought of you
The file on you complete
Except what we forgot to do
A thousand kisses deep

There is unresolved anger and hurt:

I could not kill
the way you kill
I could not hate
I tried, I failed

and

Fare thee well my nightingale
I lived but to be near you

I love this book

Leonard Cohen has been a BIG favorite of mine for 40-something years. His music is some of the most recorded stuff on the planet. Even if his voice is an acquired taste, other performer love his songs enough to make their own versions.

Cohen's poetry in this book is no different than his music -- great stuff. Some is exactly the same as his best lyrics, and some is changed to match the written word better. This book is a fantastic book of poetry.

The only person on the planet back in the 60/70's who wasn't blown away by Bob Dylan was Leonard Cohen. That's because his songs were better. Dylan's imagery was far out, ahead of it's time. Cohen's poetry though written for it's time, was also out ahead of it. I like Cohen's stuff more but Dylan is no slouch either. Anyhow if you like personal poetic conceit this book will do it.

even though I rarely see someone who is not already into LC being converted via this book, nonetheless its a joy to read. the melancholy, the cycisism, the humor, and the language. its a book that i have spent numerous winter nights enjoying. recommended.

About the Author
Timothy Corrigan is a Professor of English, Cinema Studies, and History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. His work in Cinema Studies has focused on modern American and contemporary international cinema. He received a BA from the University of Notre Dame, and completed graduate work at the University of Leeds, Emory University, and the University of Paris III. His books include New German Film: The Displaced Image (Indiana UP), The Films of Werner Herzog: Between Mirage and History (Methuen); Writing about Film (Seventh Edition, Longman); A Cinema without Walls: Movies and Culture after Vietnam (Routledge/Rutgers UP); Film and Literature: An Introduction and Reader (Second Edition, Routledge); The Film Experience (Second Edition, Bedford/St. Martin’s, coauthored with Patricia White); Critical Visions: Readings in Classic and Contemporary Film Theory (Bedford/St. Martin’s, coauthored with Patricia White); and The Essay Film: from Montaigne, after Marker (Oxford UP, forthcoming). He has published essays in Film Quarterly, Discourse, and Cinema Journal, among other collections, and is also an editor of the journal Adaptation and an editorial board member of Cinema Journal. Patricia White is Associate Professor and Chair of the Program in Film and Media Studies at Swarthmore College. She is the author of Uninvited: Classical Hollywood Cinema and Lesbian Representability (Indiana UP, 1999) and numerous articles and chapters on film theory and culture. She is writing a book on women filmmakers and world cinema. She is a member of the editorial collective of the leading English-language journal of feminism and film, Camera Obscura, and she currently chairs the board of the nonprofit feminist media arts organization and independent distributor Women Make Movies.
