Jung's seminar on Kundalini yoga, presented to the Psychological Club in Zurich in 1932, has been widely regarded as a milestone in the psychological understanding of Eastern thought and of the symbolic transformations of inner experience. Kundalini yoga presented Jung with a model for the developmental phases of higher consciousness, and he interpreted its symbols in terms of the process of individuation. Sonu Shamdasani has brought together the lectures and discussions from this seminar for the first time. This volume also offers newly translated material from Jung's German language seminars, a seminar by the indologist Wilhelm Hauer presented in conjunction with that of Jung, and Sir John Woodroffe's classic translation of the tantric text, the Sat-cakra-nirupana.

About the Author
Sonu Shamdasani is a historian of psychology at the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, London. He is the editor of Theodore Flournoy's From India to the Planet Mars: A Case of Multiple Personality with Imaginary Languages (Princeton), of Michael Fordham's Analyst-Patient Interaction, and, with Michael Munchow, Speculations after Freud: Psychoanalysis, Philosophy, Culture.

Makes it very clear

Love this because it makes this topic very clear and easy to understand.

As usual, Jung can get heady at times but overall this is good.

Most is from his lectures but the introduction really explains the topic very well.

Know your stuff first

This is not for the layperson. It's for the well-versed in the subject. Now, I'm quite intelligent, but there's jargon I couldn't grapple with, and I think you'd need some sort of grounding in actual psychology to really grasp what's being said (college grad here with decent exposure to the subject). Challenging is a good word. Imagine reading a book on building custom gaming PCs without knowing what a gpu is- that's about the level.

interesting perspective

As a student of Kundalini Shakti as a living practice, I am always interested in the process by which these ideas came to the West. This slim volume providew one episode in that ongoing story. While i disagree with Jung's conclusion that Kundalini practice is not for the Western student, his insights are important.

Great wisdom for every creative endeavor

To be honest, I had never heard of Dani Shapiro before this book. I only found it through a post on Facebook that mentioned it. I will definitely be looking at the rest of her titles.

For me, this book serves as a reminder that despite the push toward science and mathematics in our schools today, creative endeavors in writing, art, etc. are still worthy. Not to say that those who love science or math aren't creative - they are. I remember speaking with a computer programmer once and he told me that he found what he did very creative. Often to those of us outside of a discipline, we don't see the draw of it.

What I enjoyed about the book was the prevailing lesson that you don't need to wait for The Big Idea before you sit down to write, to sculpt, or whatever your endeavor is. You just need to begin and the story, sculpture, picture will emerge. Shapiro also echoes what I've heard time and time again about your chosen work: discipline. Show up. Be present.

Some favorite moments:

* Don't think too much. There'll be time to think later. Analysis won't help. You're chiseling now. You're passing your hands over the wood. Now the page is no longer blank. There's something there. It isn't your business yet to know whether it's going to be prize-worthy someday, or whether it will gather dust in a drawer. Now you've carved the tree. You've chiseled the marbled. You've begun.
*When two people who shouldn't be married to each other bring a child into the world, that child - I'm distancing myself here, making myself into a character - that child cannot help but feel as if she's navigating the world on a borrowed visa. Her papers aren't in order. Her right to be here is in question.
*I sit down everyday at around the same time and put myself in the path of inspiration...If I don't sit down, if I'm not there working, the inspiration will pass right by me, like the right guy in a romantic comedy who's on the other side of the party but the girl never sees because she' focused on her total loser of a date.
*I haven't waited to be in the mood. I've just gone ahead and done it anyway, because that's what I've been doing for years now.
*She is practicing, because she knows that there is no difference between practice and art. The practice IS the art.
*It would be many years before I began to understand that all of life is practice: writing, driving, hiking, brushing teeth, packing lunch boxes, making beds, cooking dinner, making love, walking dogs, even sleeping. We are always practicing. Only practicing.
*"Know your own bone," Thoreau wrote. "Gnaw at it, bury it, unearth it, gnaw it still." Of course, the beginning of this powerful piece of wisdom is: "Do what you love." In order to do what we love - whether we are woodworkers, legal-aid attorneys, emergency room physicians, or novelists - we must first know ourselves as deeply as we are able. Know you own bone. This self-knowledge can be messy. But it is at the center of our life's work, this gnawing, this unearthing. There is never an end to it. Our deepest stories - our bones - are our best teachers. Gnaw it still.
*When I first learned of Buddhism's eight vissicitudes - pain and pleasure, gain and loss, praise and blame, fame and disrepute - I was taught that it is unskillful to compare. We will never know what's coming. We cannot peer around the bend. Envy is human, yes, but also corrosive and powerful. It is our job to pursue our own dharma and covet no one else's.

Amazing Book

Still Writing is a collection of short essays (1-3 tiny pages) about Shapiro's life and writing. The book is divided into three sections: beginnings, middles, and ends. When I started the book, I was a bit iffy about it. I couldn't get comfortable with the format, and I felt like the essays didn't join together. But just like my friend's dog who needs to yank his blanket around before getting comfortable and going to bed, by the end of the beginnings section, I had fallen in love with this little book. Everything suddenly clicked. I had been reading lots of action SF&F books, and this book is the complete opposite of that. This little piece of creative nonfiction is quiet and thoughtful and needs to be read in small doses. With the constant little breaks with each little essay, you are subconsciously encouraged to put the book down and live your life a little more creatively.

I loved this book so much. It reminded me of one creative nonfiction class that I took and another one that I didn't take and regret to this day for passing up. I want to buy copies of this book and send it to my friends and to my creative nonfiction professor. I want to read this book again and underline it and write notes in the margin.

I am not a writer with a capital W, nor do I want to be. I like reading and the idea of being a writer sounds lovely, but I don't think I can do the time (I am not what you would call a self-starter, outside motivation is something that I really need). However, this book spoke to me. This is a book that speaks to anyone who lives a creative life or has lost his or her way.

This book is perfect in so many ways. Each sentence is thoughtful and each essay is "tight." At the end of each essay, I never felt like more need to be said. Shapiro was able to say what needed to say in just a handful of paragraphs each time. The flow worked well going from discussing beginnings, to middles, to ends. I want to reread the book again, so I can notice the flow at the beginning of the book better.

My only critique of this book is more of a wonder. Shapiro refers to some of her other books that she has written. I wonder, if you are familiar with Shapiro's writing that some of the essays would feel repetitive, because she discusses some of the events in them in this book.

Writng is a murky business. Dani Shapiro is that clear, calm voice that soothes a writer's self doubts.

She let's you know that
we've all been there before and most important priority is not to lose focus.

Trust the process. Embrace the struggle. Stay calm and ride it out. Even when its uncomfortable.

It will reward you in more ways than you'd expect. It's the writing that matters.

No single writer has the right and only way.
Each writer has to find what works their best and honor it. Showing up regularly. Commit.

Ms. Shapiro shows that it can give an enriching life if you seriously open up to all. Teaching you about yourself, your life and even the past.

It has garnered a place on my 'most favorite' shelf..

When it reached the Supreme Court in 1919, the case of Jacob Abrams and four other Russian-Jewish immigrant anarchists who were convicted and eventually deported in 1921 became a precedent-setting test of the First Amendment. In an impressively researched and comprehensive summary of this extraordinarily complex case, Polenberg, author of One Nation Divisible, focuses on the Supreme Court's "clear and present danger" criterion determining limits of free speech, and the reasoning behind the dissents of Justices Holmes and Brandeis, which continued to influence the extent of freedom of expression until the 1969 adoption of the broader "likeness to incite" lawless-action interpretation of the First Amendment. The author recalls the motives that led the individual immigrants to espouse anarchism and what they suffered for their beliefs. He also compares U.S. surveillance, headed by the young J. Edgar Hoover, and prison conditions with the violent confrontations and more brutal treatment to which anarchists were subjected in Russia at the hands of the Cheka (and later PGU) secret police, which disillusioned even such staunch American radicals as Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. The Hobo Philosopher

This is an exceptional book. I am shocked that I am the first to write a review of this work. There are enough legal questions presented in this work to keep any researcher busy of the rest of his life.

The Abrams case is a precedent setting case. We learn some of the legal controversies - screaming "FIRE" in a crowed theater and the "Clear and Present Danger" notion.

It takes place during that violent and outrageous period in American history referred to as the Red Scare. Abrams, Steimer, Lachowsky, Lipman, and Schwartz are arrested for printing up and distributing leaflets critical of the American Government during a time of war. They specifically protest the sending of American troops to fight on Russian soil in opposition to Bolshevism. This is a little known fact, in itself, to most Americans. They suggest various types of protest actions to be taken by citizens. [None of which advocate an "armed" march on Washington D.C. as is being suggested by some present day discontents. This we can be assured will not be tolerated.]

All the defendants were recent Jewish immigrants who had escaped persecution in Czarist Russia. In the United States they had become activist for workers rights and protections. They fancied themselves to be Anarchist - a rather confusing philosophy that advocated the eventual dissolution of all governments. A philosophy that has prominent advocates to this day.

The trial turned into another American historical farce. Defendants, Lachowsky and Schwartz were beaten by police and interrogators. Schwartz, it is claimed, was beaten to death while in custody. All the defendants received long prison terms (10 & 20 years) and then were granted the choice of deportation for crimes that required at most a warning. In England defendants in such cases received six months or less. The whole thing became another circus. We learn about the inadequacies of our appointed judges; the politics behind our Supreme Court and the multiple and abundant inadequacies of people and systems - not to mention the hyper-paranoia of the general public.

The first half of the book covers the Abrams case in detail. The second half discusses various ramifications - the draft, the press, speech in general.

In today's world of heated rhetoric this book provides substantial material for understanding. I know that I will have to read this book over from start to finish. It has so many discussions and legal notions to contend with and attempt to understand.

As a writer in today's world it is important to have some understanding of these issues. To know what types of speech have been challenged in the past as unacceptable, inflammatory, and unconstitutional.

This is a "big" book ... very important stuff. Unfortunately, I have so much to learn and so little time. But this is a good one. It deals with laws that effect all of us today. Laws that I have no doubt will be back into the news and before the courts shortly. It is inevitable.

Useless for Self-Study

As the authors point out in their preface, this book was developed as part of a classroom course - one where students would have ongoing email discussions with one another and with a teaching assistant throughout the course. As a result, many important ideas are presented in the form of "email questions", which the book leaves unanswered. Students are supposed to think about them on their own, then verify their answers by emailing the TA. Similarly, none of the chapter exercises have any answers, nor is there a student answer guide available.

While this is an interesting pedagogical approach, it severely limits the value of this book as a general physics text. In fact, outside the exact instructor-based class format used by the authors, the book is relatively useless.

As alternatives, I'd recommend Fowles & Cassiday (at the easy end of the spectrum), or for the more ambitious, just jump into Goldstein. Either of those volumes, plus a good problem book, will teach you far more physics than Hand & Free.

Decent but with a lot of flaws

There are numerous books in Classical Mechanics. However, there appears to be no other book written for undergrads besides this one which contains an almost complete list of topics. For this reason, the present book remains the unchallenged text for an undergrad Classical Mechanics course for those instructors who do not wish to deviate from the established must-be-taught curriculum.

Unfortunately, this creates some displeasure among students since the book is plagued by many problems. The typesetting and the graphics are good but everything else is not that good. Not much planning was done and not much effort was placed to convert the initial lecture notes and emails into a coherent and pedagogical manuscript. And the flaws, in my opinion, are not the lack of answers for the problems at the back of the book, nor that the book is really too advanced, nor that the book is too mathematical as has been argued by other reviewers.

Instead I take issue with: (1) The writing style is poor. (2) The solved problems and examples are not well presented and their number is not enough to cover all concepts discussed in the book. There is a good fraction of unsolved problems however. (3) The ordering of the material. For example: Chapter 3 on Oscillators could be Chapter 1. Almost no Lagrangian formalism is used. Another example is Sections 5.1 and 5.2. They use only the concept of the Lagrangian. They do not fit in Chapter 5 which is about the Hamiltonian formulation of Mechanics. (4) Not only the material could have been ordered better but, more importantly, the presentation of the topics is fragmented. For example: In Section 1.4 to concept of a constraint is given. There is some discussion on the classification/distinction of constraints but the discussion is stopped and the most important distinction - holonomic vs. nonholonomic - is discussed in Appendix A of Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, instead of presenting the theory of variations and then explain how it is applied to physical problems, the authors open sections with titles such as `2.7 Solving Problems with Explicit Holonomic Constraints' and `2.8 Nonintegrable Nonholonomic Constraints - a method that works'. As a result, great confusion emerges between the mathematical techniques and the concept of constraints. I would have preferred that the same problems (some with and some without constraints) are first solved in Chapter 1 using virtual work and then in Chapter 2 using calculus of variations. (5) There are many important issues that are left as exercises and are not discussed in the text. For example: what is the relation between the energy and the Hamiltonian? (6) There is no section on classical scattering and cross sections. This is very surprising given that one of the authors is an accelerator physicist. The students learn about the topic in a single problem: Problem 28 of Chapter 4. (This explains why I claimed that the list of topics is almost complete and not complete.)

There are several other issues that bother me but hopefully the above list is enough. There is certainly a need for another book on Classical Mechanics that will contain the topics that this book contains but written with care, attention to detail and clarity. Until then, this book will be used by many instructors and you will have to buy it if you are an undergraduate student studying the subject. If you really want to avoid it, try Landau and Lifshitz's Mechanics, Third Edition: Volume 1 (Course of Theoretical Physics) which is an excellent book but it is requiring a higher level of mathematical skill and is missing topics that were developed after the authors' deaths (e.g. chaos) or found in other volumes of the series (e.g. relativity).

fantastic book

This is a fabulous book! It is written at a very advanced level, however, which is why some of the others reviewing this book failed to see its strengths. If you are taking a second course in mechanics, and you are past the stage where you need to have your hand held throughout an entire course, then this book is ideal.

Best text book I have ever owned

This is possibly my favorite text book and I've never been happy about a text book for college in my life. Usually they get shoved in the back of my closet after my class is over. This is a part of my normal book shelf and my go to for medical reading. I have learned a lot in this book along with my class. If you need this book for a class it's a good text book, but if you just want to have a text book of injuries, such as sprang's, torn ligaments, wraps, and my favorite, medical taping for these injuries this is a very informative book to have.

I needed this book for class, but was not willing to pay the ridiculous bookstore prices at my university. This book has a different cover from the one the university sells, but it was the same thing! It helped me study for my tests and even though I no longer need it for class, I will be keeping this book to help me learn more. Definitely recommended!

A very good introduction to the later Sartre

Particularly for undergrads, Sartre scholarship nearly always circles around Being and Nothingness, and what we might call "atomistic existentialism", that being the thesis that freedom is predominantly a singular affair. However, Sartre developed his social theory over his long career, incorporating Marxism only to qualify it later. In the end, through tomes no less expansive as Being and Nothingness, such as Critique of Dialectical Reason and scads of occasional writings, Sartre wrote a philosophy that rides on his early existentialism but yet abandons some early theses about freedom, responsibility, and what we take from, and owe, others. This book by one of the best scholars of Sartre and Existentialism, Tom Flynn, synthesizes Sartre's career in an accessible and useful study. This is highly recommended for students of existentialism, latter-day Marxism, and most certainly Sartre. It distills literally thousands of pages into a fraction of that, and, more importantly, guides the reader to the very important sections in books such as the two volumes of the Critique of Dialectical Reason: Volume II [ CRITIQUE OF DIALECTICAL REASON: VOLUME II BY Sartre, Jean-Paul ( Author ) Jul-17-2006, the Flaubert study, the Genet study, and certainly all the essays collected in assorted anthologies.

Flynn's writing is clear and useful, and he is very thorough, pointing the scholar to other places where his picture of Sartre can be both substantiated and perhaps qualified. Highly recommended, too, is his Sartre, Foucault, and Historical Reason, Volume One: Toward an Existentialist Theory of History (Sartre, Foucault & Reason in History), which repeats and continues many ideas here.

About the Author

Paul Amar is Associate Professor of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. A political scientist and anthropologist, he has worked as a journalist in Egypt, a police reformer in Brazil, and a United Nations conflict resolution and economic development specialist.
