The First in the Gavin MacFadyen Suspense Series… Two decades ago, a sleepy New England town is torn apart by murder when a group of teens lure their unsuspecting victim to a lakeside beach. The prosecution’s witness is the troubled fifteen-year-old Lacey Watkins, who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Haunted by the ghosts of her family’s past, Lacey has returned to this place of scandal. With the help of her sister Terri, she is starting over. With nowhere left to run, Lacey is struggling to build a life…until her sister is found dead. When she discovers crime-scene photos of two murders mixed in with her work, Lacey suddenly finds herself at the center of a police investigation...and the target of a killer’s obsession. After twenty years with the New Haven Police Department, the ex-Detective Gavin MacFadyen is starting a new career as a private investigator. But when his ex-partner is killed in a suspicious ‘hit-and-run’, he is pulled back into that world of corrupt cops, child prostitution, gang murders, and crime bosses who litter the shore with headless corpses. Gavin has secrets of his own, but Lacey needs an ally, now more than ever…because the murderous fury of an avenger is about to destroy them both.

About the Author
Nikoo and Jim McGoldrick are storytellers, teachers, and partners in the truest sense. Nikoo was born in Tehran, Iran, and moved to United States on the eve of Iranian revolution. After receiving a degree in Mechanical engineering, for fifteen years she worked in shipbuilding and robotics, holding manufacturing and higher level management positions. Always a writer and teacher at heart, she gave up her engineering career to pursue writing full time over a decade ago. These days, she also conducts frequent workshops on writing and publishing and serves as a visiting author at middle and high schools. When their first son was born, Jim gave up a successful career in shipbuilding to pursue a PhD in Medieval and Renaissance literature. After being awarded tenure at a university in Pennsylvania, he found that the opportunity to write novels full-time could not be ignored. Since then, he and Nikoo have written well over two dozen works of fiction and nonfiction. Along with his writing, he currently teaches English and Creative Writing in northwestern Connecticut. Together, Nikoo and Jim write historical fiction as May McGoldrick and contemporary suspense thrillers as Jan Coffey. Suspense, twists, and love!
By Amazon Customer
I just finished reading Road Kill this morning at 6:10am --- I have one complaint -- I could not put it down and once the book ended I wanted more, more! then I read that it is the first book in the series. What more can I ask for?

I fell in love with the 2 main characters. Gavin and Lacey are smart, wickedly sexy, loving, and caring characters. I was so drawn to them that I cried when we find out about their personal stories as it was so heart warming though sad. The story had enough twists that I did not guess who "dun it" - not to mention such a surprised ending - and that is what I call a suspense. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Jan Coffey - you did it again! Thank you!

Fast-paced, lots of suspense, great characters
By Donna McMaster
Really enjoyed getting to know Gavin and Lacey. Early in the book I found myself questioning the details; e.g., why go after Lacey when she wasn't the killer? But by the end the pieces made sense and came together very satisfactorily. I've been a Jan Coffey fan for years and was delighted to see that this the first of a new series. Looking forward to the next!

loved it!

Lacey’s sister is found dead. Having spent time behind bars she embarks on finding her sister’s killer. The sudden appearance of pictures on her computer that are linked to Terri’s death is a mystery that unravels slowly. It’s a gripping story that will keep you guessing. The plot takes a different twist when Gavin falls for Lacey. Meanwhile lingering in his mind was the mysterious death of Stephanie Green. Lacey has little or no choice but to trust her instinct. The story gets even more interesting when evidence of what Terri was working on before she died begun to resurface.

Clearly the author’s suspenseful writing is adept at letting her readers really get to know her characters. The story doesn't write one-dimensional characters that are easy to predict. You get into the characters' lives, motivations, thoughts and actions but at the same time the momentum of the story is well paced. I was quite riveted throughout the entire book. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing who did it?

‘Donna and Ron Marteka locked up in his office with the blinds down at least half an hour. What do you think they’re doing? Not forgetting Ron is married.

Not read any books written by this author but I must say I’m keen to do so now. Loved it! – Definitely a must read!
