This Book Could Give Back Your Health

This was the third of Doug Kaufmann's books I've read and it really gave me some important insights on health problems I have had for years. I grew up on large doses of antibiotics for continual strep infections, and consequently also lots of major food allergies such as eggs, dairy, and gluten. I've also lived in various houses and apartments that had been flooded and had mold problems. After reading Doug's books, I had my doctor prescribe Diflucan and Nystatin and am on his Phase I diet for a month. I also have been taking a lot of natural antifungals all winter during this nasty flu season, and even though surrounded both a home and work by those sick with colds and nasty flu, I caught nothing, which for me is totally amazing. Doug's books and show, Know the Cause, are slowly giving me back my health, and I really think they'd do the same for anyone who read them and gave the program a real try.

This is a great diet!

My naturopathic doctor got my turned onto this diet years ago before I ever bought the book. I just bought the book to have on hand in case I ever need to reference it or pass it on to my kids. I got on this diet when I was 23 years old. Before I got of this diet I was pudgy, my eyes were always red, and I had terrible acne that covered my whole face. My life was consumed with using proactive, even coming home on lunch break from work to wash my face, and extensive makeup application even though I really grew to Hate makeup. I had tried a couple other diets and every pill, antibiotic, face scrub, and cream I could ever find (except Accutane) and nothing had helped me. Now, at 28 years old, I am completely acne-free and I attribute a large part of that to a lifestyle that revolves around this diet. Thanks to Doug Kauffman, he has made my life so much better.

Life Changing

Doctors study lots about bacteria and viruses, but unfortunately, they study very little about fungus. Kaufman's research shows that fungus is at the root of many health problems. The dysbiosis in our intestines caused by antibiotics, medications, chemicals and poor nutrition leads to fungal overgrowth. I found great help in following his Phase One diet as well as other suggestions presented in the book and on his TV show, Know the Cause. I highly recommend it.

A great Band Song By Song!

I really enjoyed this overview of The Stranglers song catalog, As told by Hugh Cornwell. I thought it might be dry and sort of boring in some respects, but I was thankfully Wrong! I found myself re-exploring songs and albums from a new jumping off point. Hugh speaks in actual musical terms, he addresses lyrical content, inspirations, as well as the cultural world of Music while they were being created. I have loved this band for so long so I was thrilled to see this book available in America. Never just another Punk Band, The Stranglers should be part of your Life, like they were part of Hugh's, and mine!

Cornwell Does Not Tell All, But He Does Not Need To!

This was a fairly quick read as Hugh Cornwell tells us his version of THE STRANGLERS history song by song. Using this format it is far from the full story that you could read in NO MERCY (the other Stranglers biography that Hugh claims is Jet Black's version even though he is not the author)
As a fan of Hugh's music I truly enjoyed reading this.He tells the history of each song instead of a biography of The Stranglers. If you are a big Hugh fan as well you need this. A casual fan or someone looking for a true band biography should read No Mercy.

Excellent Stranglers Historical Document

While it's true this is only for the ardent Stranglers fan (i.e.--one who has followed them through any period containing Hugh Cornwell), many of the stories regarding the punk zeitgeist and tenor of the period in regards to the band's dealings with chart success, record companies, producers and the British press bring a fresh take to the well-documented punk era, and all that followed in its wake.
Though the interviewer tends to over-involve himself at times (opinions, lack of basic studio knowledge, etc.), he keeps the ball rolling with pointed questions and in-depth discussions of seemingly minute details; most often guiding Cornwell to other interesting points. One such item involves the "MenInBlack" theme in which the band entrenched themselves in the period '79-'80. You get not only the Cornwell explanation of the phenomena, but his personal views, why the band was so interested, yada yada yada...
A very impressive aspect of the book is the overall message that The Stranglers were never totally meshed-in with what is generally considered the "Punk" idea. While most groups were more concerned with looking the part or getting their rocks off, Cornwell and the boys appear quite conscious of their place among the UK music industry. There is much talk of chart positions, commerciiality, calculated structuring of songs and albums, record company pressures, and much more in that vein. These guys were professionals. Music was their job. They ran a business, and Song By Song details the growth and dissipation of The Stranglers as a commercial outfit.

Dobyns at his best

I first picked up a copy of Black Dog/Red Dog when I was a teenager, and it blew my mind. Since that moment, Dobyns has been one of my favorite poets. Much of the poetry is raw and/or angry, but it is never self indulgent. The poems are written in his characteristic prose like style, and you can see the influence of his journalism background. These are some of the most powerful and honest poems I have ever come across. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves poetry.

I suppose that these poems aren't for everyone, nor is the poet. but then, what is? I personally love them (the poems and the poet), though I know poeple that don't.

Some claim that Dobyns's verse is too prosaic, that it is closer to prose, broken into lines, than it is to actual poetry. I would argue that the poems in this volume are closer to prose poetry, than to prose or poetry, per se. Dobyns's style does not consist of subtlety of language, but straight forward sentences with subtle rhythms. The sentences are often short and forceful, violent. Others are longer and equally vivid, and together they create that subtle rhythm of words and ideas. "This morning as dawn broke I was walking / at the outskirts of town. I saw the first light / strike the clapboard front of the general / store next to the woods, reflect from the silver / chrome of a chash register in the front window." (from "Caverns of Darkness," p. 5) The attentive reader will recognize that these poems are not simple-minded. One need not read each poem over and over to catch each line, but in order to make sense of each poem as a whole. The ideas are as subtle as the rhythms, but once they hit you.... you'll realize you can only read one at a time. These poems need a bit of time to soak in, to wallow in the misery, and to finally come 'round and think maybe things aren't so bad after all. In a dark world, or a dark night, Stephen Dobyns sees a faint light, stray and shimmering.

Dobyns Does Not Improve With Age

Stephen Dobyns has consistently been a boring poet, that is, he calls himself a poet and his editors have gone along with the subterfuge. He writes mostly prose broken into lines. When he reads, his prosiness becomes even more apparent and unbearable. Why is he considered one of the country's best poets? I have no idea. The only thing I can figure is that we have reached the sorry pass where our academic MFA professors and their students like anything that doesn't sound like poetry. No need to despair, though. There are still good poets out there. YOu likely won't find them being published in the pages of our most "respected" journals, like APR or Poetry, however.
